The Facebook Community Is Now Officially 2 Billion People
Last week, Founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook has reached a new milestone. According to Zuckerberg, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people strong. It took eight years to reach the 1 billion mark, but only five years to reach 2. To celebrate this milestone with the Facebook community, the social media giants introduced a little something called Good Adds Up, a personalized video to celebrate bringing the world closer together. So far so good.
Let’s Talk Numbers
2 billion people, that’s a lot. This actually makes the Facebook community the largest social media network in terms of logged-in users. This puts them above YouTube’s 1.5 billion, WeChat’s 899 million, Twitter’s 328 million and Snapchat’s 255 million.
Facebook’s growth in the past 5 years has been relentless. Fueled by technology, it has optimized its platform for mobile phone users and low bandwidth connections. When the Facebook community hit 1 billion users, 55% of users returned each day. Now that it has hit 2 billion, 66% of users keep coming back to use Facebook every day.
This landmark is significant in many ways. First of all, it exhibits the amount of influence Facebook has over society. The social media network has acknowledged this and they have pledged to bring the world closer. In fact, if you follow Zuckerberg’s activities, you will see that he has been doing a lot of traveling in order to understand how users are using Facebook. One can say that now Facebook’s aim is to develop empathy before it reaches 3 billion.
The Way Forward
The world’s biggest social media network wants to give people the power to build a powerful Facebook community. According to Zuckerberg, this will help create a more open and connected world in the future. It can also prove to be a powerful tool to tackle global problems and now that it has reached 2 billion users, Facebook is taking this responsibility seriously.
Of course, there is a host of ethical challenges on the path to democratize access to people. Facebook will continue to push and make its Groups more meaningful so that it can solve critical issues. The Facebook community has to focus on thinking about broader issues and not what is going on in each other’s lives. This is something that the company believes in, and only time will tell if they are successful or not.
So, What Does This Mean For Marketers?
Now, back to business. As a marketer, this milestone is a gold-mine. It opens up a vast number of opportunities for you and your business. That means that your Facebook page has a chance of reaching out to more people. You can place targeted Facebook ads to rope in a more relevant audience.
With almost 1.2 billion people logging in every day, I don’t think this is a difficult task anymore. The social media network offers a fantastic advertising platform for marketers if you didn’t know. The charges are flexible and you can target people by specifics like geographical area, age, education, devices used for browsing, workplace, etc. 2 billion people on Facebook means more leads and customers for marketers. If you play your cards right, you will be able to generate a lot of relevant response for your organization.
Facebook is a powerful platform. Its community has the power to change the world in terms of society as well as business. How you use that power is up to the users. It is growing at a rapid pace and it is showing no signs of slowing down.
For a marketer, the Facebook community is an indispensable part of their social media marketing campaigns. So, more users mean one thing, that is, it is more important for marketers now, more than ever. I would not be surprised if Facebook goes on to become the most important part of digital marketing campaigns in the near future.
